We drove along the northern coast of Maui from Kaanapali to the Iao valley state park. The drive had some amazing sights. We stopped at several view points, the most notable one being Honolua bay. It had a great view of the bay below. The water looked quite calm in the bay area and it seemed like an excellent snorkeling spot (although there were only a few people snorkeling there).
The drive got pretty crazy pretty soon. Not only was the "highway" very curvy, it was also a single lane being shared by traffic on both directions. If you take this route, you should also keep an eye out for fresh and dried fruit vendors. The pineapple we had here was the juiciest one ever!
The Iao valley part of the island was very different from the west side we were staying in. The west side was dry, but this area was lush green. We spent an hour or so at the park, saw the Iao valley needle and walked around some trails.
We decided to head back and snorkel at the Honolua Bay. The water was calm and clear and there were plenty of species of fish to see. We also spotted a school of fish probably 200-300 strong. We had never been so close to such a huge school of fish and that was easily the highlight of the day for us.
